Bakuchiol vs Retinol

A Gentler Way to Firm the Eye Area

Retinol is the ingredient dermatologists often reach for first, and the one most people quietly avoid anywhere near their eyes. Here’s how bakuchiol compares, and where it earns its place in an eye-area routine.

Retinol has a well-earned reputation as one of the most effective anti-ageing ingredients available, and an equally well-earned reputation for being difficult to tolerate. For most people, that difficulty shows up first around the eyes: stinging, flaking, redness, and a general sense that this particular product was not designed with eyelid skin in mind.

The common response is to simply stop applying retinol anywhere near the eyes, which solves the irritation problem but leaves the thinnest, often first-to-age skin on the face without any support at all. That’s the gap bakuchiol is increasingly being used to fill.

What retinol actually does (and why it can misbehave near the eyes)

Retinol works by binding to retinoic acid receptors in the skin, which speeds up cell turnover and signals the skin to produce more collagen. It’s genuinely effective for fine lines, texture and firmness; but that same potency is what makes it so irritating on thin, low-oil, high-movement skin like the eye area, and it’s also sun-sensitising, meaning it needs to be paired carefully with daytime SPF.

Enter bakuchiol – a plant-derived alternative

Bakuchiol is extracted from the seeds and leaves of the babchi plant. Despite being grouped with retinol as an “alternative,” it doesn’t actually work the same way, it doesn’t bind retinoic acid receptors at all. Instead, it appears to support collagen production and cell turnover through a different pathway, alongside some antioxidant and calming properties of its own.

In head-to-head research, bakuchiol has produced improvements in fine lines and firmness comparable to retinol, with meaningfully less reported stinging and scaling. It’s worth being honest about the caveat here: retinol has decades of research behind it and remains the more studied, more potent option overall. Bakuchiol is newer to the market and the research base, while promising, is smaller – but for the specific problem of eye-area tolerability, it’s a genuinely useful trade.

Is bakuchiol “as good as” retinol?

Not exactly, and it doesn’t need to be. Think of it less as a direct swap and more as the right tool for a specific job: an eye area that’s too reactive for retinol but still ages, still loses firmness, and still benefits from an ingredient that encourages collagen support without the irritation trade-off. For people who’ve never been able to tolerate retinol at all, it’s often the first anti-ageing active they can actually use consistently.

How to work it into a routine

  • Unlike retinol, bakuchiol isn’t broken down by sunlight, so it can be used morning or night
  • Results build gradually – give any bakuchiol-based product around 12 weeks of consistent use before judging it
  • Pair with daily SPF regardless, since sun exposure remains the biggest driver of visible eye-area ageing
  • Look for it combined with hydrating ingredients, since bakuchiol works best as part of a well-rounded formula rather than in isolation

Eyelid Defence uses bakuchiol as its anti-ageing pillar for exactly this reason, alongside mineral SPF for daytime protection, giving the eye area a gentler active ingredient without asking it to tolerate something it was never really suited to in the first place.

If retinol has never quite agreed with the skin around your eyes, you don’t have to give up on active skincare altogether. Discover why we chose bakuchiol for Eyelid Defence, and how the rest of the formula was designed specifically with the eye area in mind.
